 Gay AND a Christian??
Back to Full Blog

Ok, bare with me for a bit..I hope those of you that know me, or have read my posts know where I stand on this issue, but I had to bring it up seeing as how I've seen so much of it lately on t.v.

Can you be gay and still be a follower of Christ?? The answer seems obvious to me, if you read your Bible. But recently I've watched a couple shows that feature people claiming to be both practicing homosexuals, and followers of Christ at the same time. At first, it made me furious for them to propose such a proposterous notion. Then, as I thought about it,it occured to me that this is a sin just like any other. Does God look more down on a homosexual than a murderer? A liar? A thief?

I know the bible calls it a detestable sin. But why is it that this isn't a sin that we try to help people come out of like we do the other sins? I know what you're thinking... you're saying that it's not like they are believers who stumble into sin; they are claiming to be believers, and yet actively participating in a sin that they don't see as a sin. But don't we actively participate in sin everyday?

But you know what else occured to me? The fact that a lot of these people might live their lifes more according to the Bible than the rest of us. And they claim to be believers! I hope you realize that I'm partially playing the devil's advocate here, but I think these are very relevant questions. More importantly, how do you minister to one of these people? Tell me what you think. God bless

Well, Guns - interesting questions and thoughts. I would say that I have already reached that conclusion. And I am not popular (if one who really walks with Jesus can be) with alot of Christians. I believe it is exactly as you say. I have friends who are living that lifestyle and call themselves Christians and they would be unwelcome in most churches but I would welcome them. I have one stipulation and that is true for anyone I am aware of that deliberatly commits sin - ponography is a big one in the church - they cannot be in leadership of any kind. And I think you are so right - sin is sin - are we not told to love the sinner? But Christians tell me all the time that I am approving of the sin if I love the sinner . WEll, seems that Jesus loved the sinners; seems that I have to catch the fish and then clean them; so should I not help Jesus catch the sinners and then let Him clean them up - so maybe the question is this: how can I truly be a friend to the gays (Christian or not-yet-Christian) and bring them to Jesus and let Him clean them up (I can help by loving them and mentoring them). Amen Hope. It's hard to say what to do in this situation, but I'm sure no matter what, the answer is to love. I can't imagine what it must be like to feel that way(homosexual), and yet know that u need a relationship with Jesus. I wonder how to go about ministering to someone like this is? Are they going to hell if they say they've accepted Christ, yet practice homosexuality?

Guns - Prayer on your part as you walk with this person is the biggest key. And why would they go to hell anymore than someone with a 'spirit of unforgiveness' that can be hidden in the heart of one who professes that he is a Christian (in the Lord's prayer it says - 'forgive our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.') We have to do what we feel God is telling us to do - be a friend of sinners - and praise God the judging is up to God - ! I have a friend who has a sinful addiction and they are often a youth leader in the church they attend; talk about how 'to be a friend' - ???? I just keep praying that God will give me His love for this person. June

I don't support homosexuality because The Bible clearly states its a sin, like you said. But- it also says that God sees every sin as equal... from telling a white lie to murder. Which is really hard to comprehend.

But- because it says that, and I consider myself to be a Christian (the sinner that I am) I think God accepts them as well. We're all sinners. But I think they need to know that they are wrong and maybe trying to change.

Just what I think, it's an interesting thing to think about.
